Internet users using unsecured WiFi connections are the next vicitims after Cyber Cafe owners, whose connections have been found to be used by Terrorists Outfits claiming responsiblity for various blasts in the country. In view of such threats, TRAI has issued various instructions to the ISPs to be followed by WiFi users to make sure there is connection is fully secured and there is no possibility of mis-use. |

Lakshmana Kailash K, a computer engineer, was wrongly arrested from his home in Bangalore in August 2007 for having defamed Shivaji on Orkut.com, he was tracked with the help of information shared by ISP, Bharti Airtel. He was taken to Pune and put behind bars, where he spent 50 days, 3 weeks after real culprits were nabbed. |

Indonesia's parliament on 25 March passed a new information bill that criminalises the transmission of pornographic material on the web. In response, hackers defaced the website of Indonesia's information ministry. The hackers posted a message on the information ministry's website, saying: 'Prove that the law has not been made to cover government stupidity.' But later, the website could not be accessed, and would-be viewers were met only with the message, 'Access has been denied.' |

Cyber Crime Statistics reveal that Women are the
victims in majority of the case. Last month, 35 women lodged complaints
with Kolkata cyber crime cell regarding fake profiles put up on various
social networking websites. The head of the cyber crime cell says "Most
of the complainants are members of Orkut. The impersonators used the
photographs on the real profile to create a fake one. Fake profiles
were also put up on other online social networks."
Orkut has been facing lot of heat off late, even earlier in the week,
Shiv Sainiks attacked Mumbai Cyber Cafes and damaged property to
protest against Orkut. Read

Asian Countries - Sri Lanka, Thailand and
Indonesia introduced Cyber Crime Bills/Acts last month.The Basis of the
Sri Lankan Computer Crimes Bill is to criminalise attempts at
unauthorised access to a computer, computer programme, data or
information. Similarly, Thailaind's approved Cyber Crime Bill, gives
officials power to crack down effectively on hacking and
internet-related crimes through harsher punishments. Whereas, US
brought in three new enactments to regulate Cyber Space, this included
US sentate passing a new anti-spyware legislation I-SPY Act, Cyber
Security Enhancement and Cyber Security Bill.
